Title
Handbook for Designing and Writing Distance Education Materials.
Abstract
Developed from a series of workshops in Kenya, this handbook offers practical guidance for those creating printed distance education materials for African students. The introduction describes the workshops and a short section explains how to use the handbook. Twelve units appear on the following topics: (1) overview of distance education; (2) distance education systems and subsystems; (3) learner characteristics; (4) writing objectives; (5) writing to be read and understood; (6) active learning; (7) developing a format for writing; (8) the role of visualization in distance education materials; (9) the editorial process; (10) practical aspects of pretesting distance education materials; (11) the printing process; and (12) a summary of course development from planning to printing. Units start with advance organizers for the unit and typically include in-text questions to think about, self-tests (answers appear at the back of the document), checklists, and writing assignments. Important points are marked for the reader. The document includes an 18-item bibliography. (CML)
