Approaches to the format, design, and layout of printed instructional materials for distance education are illustrated in 36 samples designed to accompany the manual, "Writing for Distance Education." Each sample is presented on a single page with a note pointing out its key features. Features illustrated include use of typescript layout, a comic strip story, various question and instruction formats, check lists, signs and a key, study guidance, diagrams, list formats, pictures reinforcing written messages, objectives, culturally relevant design, charts, flowcharts, tables, photographs, and illustrations. Materials used in the examples are taken from a variety of actual projects and courses--e.g., biology, French, English, German, mathematics, educational studies, introduction to the computer, and vegetable growing--in such institutions as the Mauritius College of the Air, Javeriana Open University (Colombia), Botswana Extension College, Kenya Cooperative College, Open University, Lesotho Distance Teaching Centre, and the National Extension College.
