Title
How worldwide is the Web?
Abstract
The writer discusses four important lessons learned while using the World Wide Web to locate a student's grandmother in Kenya. These lessons are that Web material has the potential to support global understanding, that the knowledge encoded in the Web results in serendipitous learning, that there is a need to critically investigate the Web's store of knowledge, and that the Web is far from worldwide. The writer describes InfoNation, an easy-to-use two-step database that allows the user to view and compare up-to-date statistical data for members of the United Nations; discusses Literacy Web Australia, a valuable resource for schools and literacy education; and provides a glossary of terms.
